Frances came into the care of the Waifs and Strays Society at York as a tiny child, following the death of her mother. From 1920 - 31 they gave her a home and a good childhood, and laid the foundations of the deep Christian faith which sustained her all through her life. She never ceased to be grateful for their kindness and care.

Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush. Of quiet birds in circled flight.
